Hair Topper Aftercare Guide

Providing the correct care for your topper can extend its lifespan and keep it looking fresh and natural. Please follow this advice to keep you topper looking amazing and healthy.

Washing
-
Frequency: Wash your topper every 7-14 wears, depending on how often you wear it and how much product or sweat builds up. Over washing can wear it out faster.

-
Method: Fill a basin with lukewarm water (never hot, as it can damage and loosen the knots in the cap). Add a small amount of topper specific shampoo, mild shampoo for human hair. Gently swish the topper in the water for a minute or two, avoiding rubbing or scrubbing to prevent tangling or frizz. Rinse thoroughly under cool running water until all shampoo is gone.

-
Conditioning: Apply a topper-friendly conditioner, keeping away from the topper base, conditioners can loosen where the hair is knotted to the base. Work it through the hair with your fingers, focusing on mid-lengths and ends, and let it sit for a few minutes. Rinse your topper well ensuring all conditioner is removed. Use a leave-in conditioner, again keeping away from the knots, spray after rinsing, ideally one that has heat protection included.

-
Drying Technique: Gently blot the topper with a microfibre towel to remove excess water, don’t wring or twist the hair, as this can distort the shape or damage the cap. Lay it flat on a towel to air dry, or place it on a wig stand for better airflow.

-
Heat Warning: Never use a hairdryer on full heat as it can melt the fibres in the base material. Air drying is safest, but if you must use a dryer, keep it on a low heat setting.

Styling and Maintenance
-
Detangling: Before and after washing, gently detangle with a wide-tooth comb or a wig-specific brush. Start at the ends and work up to the roots to avoid pulling out strands. Don’t brush a wet topper as it can stretch or break the cap and pull out the hair from the cap.

-
Styling: You can use low-heat tools (curling iron, flat iron) with a heat protectant spray.

-
Daily Care: After wearing, give the topper a light shake and comb through to remove minor tangles. If it’s sweaty or oily, run your fingers along the inside of the cap with a dry tissue to lift residue.

Storage
-
Short-Term: Place the topper on a wig stand when not in use to maintain its shape and allow it to air out.

-
Long-Term: Store it in a breathable box (like the one it came in). Keep it away from direct sunlight, heat sources, pets, or kids to avoid damage or fading.

Extra Tips
-
Products: Stick to topper-specific shampoos, conditioners, and serums. Regular hair products can cause build up. A leave-in conditioner or spray can reduce static and keep your topper smooth. You can apply a small amount of serum to the ends of the hair to keep them moisturised.

-
Wear: Avoid sleeping in your topper to prevent tangling and cap stress. If you really must, use a silk scarf or bonnet to minimize friction however this can cause damage to your topper and natural hair. Remove it while cooking near open flames or ovens, this can cause human hair to frizz.
